Wrinkles around the mouth (also called perioral wrinkles) can be caused by age, genetics, smoking, and sun exposure. These wrinkles, which are mostly due to a loss of collagen and elasticity, can be treated in several different ways.
Fillers. Typically, a hyaluronic acid-based filler (such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Belotero) can be used to fill in lines individually. Fillers are a wonderful way to replace lost volume and the treatment can be done in as quickly as 10 mins with results lasting between 6-12 months.
Botox. Botox treatments soften the area of injection, helping to prevent wrinkles around the mouth from worsening while adding volume to the upper lip. It typically takes only minutes to perform a few injections with results lasting roughly 4-6 month. Mosquito-bite sized bumps may appear at the injection site following treatment and can last for a few hours, but you are able to return to normal activities immediately.
Fraxel. Also called “skin resurfacing” or a “deep laser peel”, Fraxel is a great treatment to smooth out the upper lip. It gently removes the dead, outer layer of skin while stimulating new skin and collagen growth, filling in any creases in the upper lip. Best results are typically seen after 3-6 treatments with each scheduled one month apart.
